First Blog:
Welcome to my first blog! My name is Yurtle (not really), and I’m a senior in high school. I’m into a lot of things, but music, robotics, and photography are at the top of the list. I’m actually the leader of my school’s engineering and photography teams, and I play and sing for my church’s praise team.
Truth be told, I’m only doing this blog as part of a project for my English class over the book The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien. I’m not really sure how this is going to turn out yet since I’ve never written a blog, but I’m excited about it. A lot of the other students are complaining about it, but I think it’ll be a nice change of pace. Blogging already feels so much more relaxed than traditional English assignments. And I can do it from my phone so I can write almost anywhere.
The Things They Carried is a “true” story based on O’Brien’s experiences in the Vietnam War. While not all of the events may have happened literally, each story, conversation, and action represents the very real situation the soldiers faced in Vietnam. As John Ransom’s Andersonville Diary perfectly states in his introduction:
“Those who have had any such experience as the author will see its truthfulness at once, and to all other readers it is commended as a statement of actual things by one who experienced them to the fullest.”
So here it goes. The start of a blogging event. Maybe this blog will help immortalize the things they carried.
